Weekly data-driven insights on the markets and economy
Third week of September 2026
Fed hikes rates
The Federal Reserve approved a quarter-point interest rate increase on Wednesday, lifting its benchmark rate to 3.75%-4%. The move reflects ongoing concerns about elevated inflation, driven in part by higher energy prices and other economic pressures. Most Fed officials indicated they expect at least one additional rate hike this year. As a result, borrowing costs may remain elevated across mortgages, loans and other forms of credit.[i]
Airbnb’s affordable housing push
Airbnb announced a $250 million initiative on Wednesday to help accelerate affordable housing development as affordability challenges continue to keep many younger Americans at home. A record 25.2 million adults under age 35, roughly one in three young adults, lived with their parents last year despite most being employed, according to Realtor.com. Airbnb said the program could help unlock additional housing investment and support projects that have been delayed by financing gaps.[ii]
Fuel fears flare
Energy executives warned on Monday that tightening fuel supplies could keep oil prices elevated as inventories shrink and disruptions continue across key energy routes. Chevron CEO Mike Wirth said market buffers that once helped absorb supply shocks have largely been depleted, while diesel and gasoline prices continue to rise. The developments are renewing concerns about inflation and the impact of higher energy costs on consumers and economic growth.[iii]
AI slowdown showdown
On Monday, President Trump pushed back against calls for additional artificial intelligence regulation and criticized Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei’s proposal to slow the development of advanced AI models. The comments came as a growing number of technology leaders, including OpenAI’s Sam Altman and Elon Musk, voiced support for a more cautious approach to AI development. The debate highlights increasing tensions between efforts to accelerate innovation and concerns about the technology’s potential risks.[iv]
Treasury yields top 5%
On Tuesday, the yield on the 10-year U.S. Treasury briefly surpassed 5%, reaching its highest level since 2007 amid rising oil prices and persistent inflation concerns. The move underscored market expectations that interest rates could remain higher for longer, a view reinforced by the Federal Reserve’s rate hike announced on Wednesday. The jump in yields also reflects investor concerns that inflation may prove more persistent than anticipated.[v]
Home sales stumble
Existing home sales fell 2% in August, marking their slowest month since June 2025, according to the National Association of Realtors. Higher mortgage rates continued to weigh on demand, even as the number of homes for sale reached its highest level in more than a decade. Home prices also continued to climb, with the median sales price rising 1.6% from a year ago to a record $429,100 for August. Sales remained strongest among higher-priced homes, while lower-priced markets saw continued weakness.[vi]
