Weekly data-driven insights on the markets and economy
First Week of September 2026
Layoff Fears Fade
U.S. job cuts fell to a four-year low through the first eight months of 2026, according to Challenger, Gray & Christmas data released Thursday, despite persistent concerns that artificial intelligence would trigger widespread workforce reductions. More than 500,000 layoffs have been announced year to date, but companies are citing AI-driven job replacement less frequently as a reason for cuts, suggesting earlier disruption fears may have been overstated. The data reinforces the view that the labor market remains more resilient than expected ahead of Friday’s August employment report.[i]
Luxury Tax Scandal
This week, the NBA handed down one of the most severe penalties in league history, suspending Los Angeles Clippers owner Steve Ballmer for one year, fining the franchise $30 million, and stripping the team of five first-round draft picks following an investigation into alleged salary cap circumvention involving Kawhi Leonard. Announced this week, the penalties stem from league findings that the organization facilitated off-court income opportunities tied to team business relationships, prompting additional suspensions for senior executives and a $700,000 fine for Leonard. The case underscores the NBA’s determination to protect competitive balance and enforce salary cap rules, while setting the stage for what could be a lengthy legal challenge from a Clippers organization that strongly disputes the findings.[ii]
Premium Boarding Begins
Southwest Airlines is taking another significant step upmarket, announcing Wednesday plans to open its first airport lounges in Austin, Baltimore, Honolulu, and Nashville by late 2027 through a partnership with Chase. Access will be tied to a new premium Rapid Rewards credit card, reflecting the airline’s broader effort to attract higher-spending travelers and deepen customer loyalty. The move follows a series of major changes to Southwest’s longstanding business model and signals its intention to compete more directly with full-service carriers in the race for premium travel revenue and ancillary income growth.[iii]
Apple’s Next Chapter
Earlier this week, Apple entered a new era as longtime hardware executive John Ternus succeeded Tim Cook, taking the helm of the world’s most valuable company at a pivotal moment. Beyond managing a high-profile leadership transition, Ternus inherits a range of challenges, including rising memory costs, growing pressure to define Apple’s artificial intelligence strategy, and intensifying competition from emerging device categories. His success will likely depend on balancing Apple’s core product strengths with the ability to deliver the next wave of innovation and growth beyond the iPhone, a transition that could shape the company’s trajectory for years to come.[iv]
Ad Tech Under Fire The Federal Trade Commission and 22 state attorneys general this week sued Amazon, alleging the company secretly inflated advertising costs through undisclosed changes to its auction system that may have generated more than $20 billion in additional revenue since 2019. The lawsuit targets the heart of Amazon’s rapidly expanding advertising business, now the world’s third-largest digital advertising platform behind Google and Meta, and adds to a growing wave of regulatory scrutiny facing major technology companies. If successful, the case could reshape digital advertising practices, increase transparency requirements across the industry, and potentially alter how online ad auctions are conducted.[v]
Rates Head Higher
Mortgage rates climbed to 6.87% this week, reaching their highest level since June 2025 as renewed conflict in the Middle East pushed oil prices and bond yields higher. The increase has materially raised borrowing costs for homebuyers, adding more than $200 to the monthly payment on a typical U.S. home purchase compared with rates seen earlier this year. With elevated financing costs and a limited housing supply continuing to constrain affordability, the latest rate surge poses another challenge for a housing market already struggling with affordability and subdued transaction activity.[vi]
